Using ubuntu and guake, (mostly because of the terminal) you can use guake to find any file you have in your history, or any type of command, even if it's in another program.
From the guake documentation:
Runs a command that lasts until you close the terminal.
The command you run will be placed in your history.
The command is run in a new terminal (remember the terminal in which you run guake).

I've never tried using dropbox, but I did use the commandline to find a file you had downloaded with a web browser.
There's a utility called "find the folder" that lets you search files using parameters such as filename and size, and in this case I simply hit:
find ~/ -name "firefox"
and it gave me a list of all files in my ~/ (Home directory) that contained firefox.
